Waking up my old buddy!

Well, I'm starting this blog all of a sudden and without knowing how exactly it will develop over time.

Last Monday I made a little clean up to my room and among some old belongings I found a Palm IIIxe PDA my father gave to me when I was a kid. At first I thought about putting it back in the box I found it in, but then I realized I could use it to make another attempt at keeping track of my homework, expenses, etc. (I always try to organize my thoughts by writing journals and keeping an agenda, but I never manage to make it a long-term habit.)

So I kept it. TV remote in hand, I borrowed it's AAA batteries and made a first attempt to see if the handheld was still working. And it worked! (Here's a pic, by the time I already installed some apps hehe).

I explored the few built-in apps it has, wrote some notes, added events to the agenda, and, and... there I realised I needed a bit of customization to it, using it out of it's twelve years hibernation implied not having a useful money tracker or more complex lists, or even some tiny vintage games.

In the past, I used to install apps on the older IIIxe via IR transfer from a Treo 650 my dad had. Since I didn't have the serial connection dock, I used to first Hotsync from the PC to the Treo device the apps I wanted to put on the IIIxe, then transferred them over infrared connection. But that Treo 650 we have doesn't work today. Damn, what do I do now?

I really wanted to try to keep a schedule with this PDA, so I searched the web trying to find someone who had the dock. Then I remembered that I no longer had a computer with a serial port, so if I bought the dock, I wouldn't be able to use it.

What then? The solution was easy, buy a newer Palm device with it's respective usb cable or dock, and then use the IR method.

Okey, here we end this first entry. Writing this seemed like a short time but it took me more than I expected 😵

In the next one I will present the new little friend I got from Facebook's Marketplace, with it the story goes on...
